History of NGOs

The establishment of the Maria Maia Disabled Children´s House was founded on 31 August 1987.

Everything began with the partnership of the brothers Alarico and Antonio Maia, who together saw the necessity of establishing an institution to host and assist disabled children.

Moved by the sense of human solidarity and the Christian faith, they founded with their own resources this institution that was named Maria Maia Disabled Children´s House as a tribute to their parents Maria (mother) and Maia (father), who were the major incentive for fighting for their cause.

Alarico Maria died on 08 October 1998. This was a great loss for the institution, but his brother, Antonio Maia, continued in the administration of the association led by the commitment, responsibility and sense of solidarity.

He continued to work getting the support of employees of the institution and watching very hard to all who came to door asking for help.

On 03 March 2007, Antonio Maia came to died, but his mission continued to be accomplished and developed by many collaborators who identified with the cause.

Today Maria Maia Disabled Children´s House has 20 patients with cerebral palsy, orphans and needy. It is directed and guided by two collegiate boards, elected by a General Assembly for the period of two years mandate without any kind of remuneration.

The medical team includes specialists from various areas, seeking for a better quality of life for their patients.

Besides all this assistance, educational workshops are offered for families with different themes and approaches and leisure activities offered monthly for all patients.

Through the partnership with volunteers and staff from companies, as sponsors our patients and the community receive presents.

Resources are obtained through weekly bazaars, charity events, donations from individuals and companies, sponsorship by a bank account.
